About MenorcaMenorca is the second largest Balearic Island and is about 12 miles north to south and 30 miles east to west. The other islands are Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Surprisingly it has more beaches than all the other Balearic Islands together. The island has at least 1000 prehistoric monuments and so has a rich and diverse history, mayonnaise was invented in Mahon, There are nearly 1000 miles of dry stone walls. It enjoys an average 315 days sun each year with temperatures ranging from an average 28 degrees in the summer to 14 degrees in January. Despite this it is the wettest of the islands with the rainy season being October to April. Menorca is the 'windy' island. It sometimes blows and when it does the sea gets rough although when the weather is like this or dull in the south you will often find it completely the opposite in the north of the island and vice versa which is worth remembering. The population is around 66,000 with 24,000 living in Mahon (Mao) and 21,000 in Ciutadella. Typically 67% of visitors are British, 13% German and 10% from the Spanish mainland. August is very popular with the Spanish having most of the month on holiday it seems. Schools in Menorca close for the summer months because it is too hot for the children to be in classrooms. Most people speak Menorquin, which is a dialect of Catalan. Catalan and Spanish are the official languages but English is spoken in most places particularly in tourist areas. During the summer months there are many fiestas that are spectacular events with very impressive horse riding skills on display. A worthwhile purchase from a newsagent is Roqueta 'Menorca's English magazine' that provides news and gives details of events. It is a quiet island with Cala En Forcat the busiest resort. Here you can find a small beach, a very good but small aqua park, multi-rider bikes, children's amusements and many restaurants. The aqua park is well worth a visit. It has 3 big water chutes and 2 small ones for toddlers, ample pools for swimmers of varying skills but you need to be there early to get sun beds or space and have plenty of sun creams because it gets very hot is summer.
